Artist Collective SCHAUM – Surrogat III, 2016

Monstrously scaled miracle fragrance trees made of cardboard let the observer shrink. The love Germans feel for their forest is old, but this is not a place to relax. Least of all is this work a sacral allegory of hope – despite its overall green appearance. Habits of how we see things and work drift apart. The initial fascination about the aesthetic execution of Surrogate – made of rubbishy alternative materials – loses ground to a rough discomfort. Instead of real plants only cardboard and colour. And the material value is as high as buying an original. A useless and scentless imitation of a mass product which again imitates something completely free of charge: nature. Why all this? What happened to our good old walk in the forest? Of course it is the bitterness that comes with losing values, deeply romantic on one side but still relevant.
Artist Collective SCHAUM (founded in 2009) lives and works in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
